Personal profile

Research interests

Research includes magnetometry, high magnetic fields, MHz/GHz/THz spectroscopy and antennas, topology, actinides and actinide compounds, Kondo insulators, oxides, magnetic-field-induced phase transitions, field-induced superconductivity, organic conductors, radiofrequency measurements, accelerated superluminal sources of radiation. Played a large role in designing the experiments that discovered field-induced superconductivity in UTe2 and those that uncovered the origins of the quantum oscillations in the Kondo insulator YbB12. Was the first to use the PDO/TDO technique to observe quantum oscillations in cuprates. Supervised four postdoctoral workers and nine students. PI on 2 LDRD-DR projects and 6 LDRD-ER projects; Co-I on 4 LDRD-DR projects and 3 LDRD-ER projects; Acting Co-PI on a DOE BES FWP.

JS has around 550 publications, six patents, and two technical copyrights; he has also written an undergraduate physics textbook and two encyclopedia articles, and edited a collection of articles on graphene. On the strength of his work on electromagnetism and antennas, he was invited to revise the widely used electromagnetism undergraduate/graduate textbook by Bleaney and Bleaney for Oxford University Press. Metrics: c. 14,500 citations total (3,600 since 2018); H-index 58 (26 since 2018); i-10 index 245 (91 since 2018). In addition to his work in physics and electrical engineering, JS has published papers on musical instrument history and lectured on the interface between science, philosophy and theology.
