Breaking metals with ultrafast optical excitation

Research output: Contribution to specialist publicationArticle

Abstract

The ultrashort-pulse laser techniques for time-resolved measurements of nonequilibrium processes were discussed. The dynamics of structural phase transition in aluminum with ultrafast optical pump-probe measurements was studied. The threshold fluence and the time scale for the structural change in Al were found to be less than the values necessary for ultrafast heat-induced melting.
