Bulk ferromagnetic glasses prepared by flux melting and water quenching

Abstract

Using a synthesis technique combining mechanical alloying, flux melting and water quenching, a number of bulk ferromagnetic glasses of the type Fe-(Co, Cr, Mo, Ga, Sb)-P-B-C were successfully prepared. The glasses are characterized by extremely soft ferromagnetic properties, low coercivity and hysteresis losses, and a large supercooled region ranging from 35 to 61 K. Within this region, which is the difference between the crystallization temperature and the glass transition temperature, the glass can be shaped under a relatively small applied load. Optimum metalloid content can be easily achieved using the difference this region as a gauge for the glass forming ability.
