Abstract
Thin-film solid-state reactions in ceramic/ceramic and metal/ceramic systems have been investigated by model reaction geometries. The reaction between monocrystalline α-alumina (Al2U3) and either NiO, yttria (Y2O3), or a Ti-alloy have been characterized by transmission and scanning electron microscopy. In the NiO/alumina system where only one reaction product forms (NiAl2O4, spinel), the nucleation and kinetics of spinel formation have been characterized for different orientations of alumina. For the yttria/alumina and Ti-alloy/alumina systems where multiple phases can form upon reaction, the initial phase formation has been characterized. Special attention has been paid to the relationship between the structure and chemistry of the interface and the mechanism of the solid-state reaction.
