Abstract

The generation of highly ionized iodine (3 plus ), xenon (5 plus ), and mercury (4 plus ) atoms at pressures of approx. 10** minus **6 Torr and laser intensities of approx. 10**1**4 W/cm**2 at 193 nm is described. A minimum energy in excess of 170 ev, corresponding to greater than equivalent to 27 photons, is required to produce Xe**5** plus .
