Abstract

LaF3 has been compared to CaF2 as a host lattice for the determination of rare earths by selective excitation of probe ion luminescence. Comparisons were done between obtainable fluorescent intensity, behavior in the presence of interfering cations, reproducibility, and background limitations to sensitivity. The two host precipitates are comparable in the intensity levels, interference effects, and reproducibility. The purity of lanthanum salts, however, prevents use of LaF3 at ultratrace levels.
