Abstract
We present molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of crack kinking, growth, propagation and healing at the nanometer scale in a confined, pre-cracked silica glass subjected to dynamic mode II loading. The pre-crack tip kinks towards maximum mode I tension and nanometer scale cavities are nucleated in the tensile region ahead of the kink. Nanocavities coalesce with kinks to form wing cracks. Dynamics of wing cracks are dominated by coalescence with damage cavities, and the growth and healing of crack and cavities are controlled by confinement. © Springer Science+Business Media B.V. 2009.
