Abstract
The HRTEM observations and atomistic simulations presented in this paper are in qualitative agreement. They show that the width of the dissociated 9R boundary phase in the copper can vary with time and this effect appears to be a response to far field strain of the bicrystal. As such, the boundary structure should be expected to depend sensitively on the local state of mechanical loading. This opens up a number of interesting questions regarding the nature of the transition regions between different states of rigid-body displacement. These issues can be addressed by diffraction-contrast imaging methods from thicker section of boundary.
