Abstract
Efficient wavelength conversion within the 1.5 μm telecommunications window was demonstrated using cascaded second-order nonlinearity in periodically-poled LiNbO3 waveguides. This approach requires only lasers operating in the 1550 nm region. The wavelength conversion device based upon this principle has a conversion bandwidth of 76 nm and linearity greater than 50 dB. It is concluded that with some further improvements, a wavelength converter with 0 dB conversion efficiency or even gain can be achieved.
