Abstract
Summary form only given, as follows. Measurements of short-wavelength radiation produced by intense UV (248-nm) irradiation (10**1**5-10**1**6 W/cm**2) of the rare gases have revealed the copious production of fluorescence from excited levels. Strong fluorescence has been observed from ions of Ar, Kr, and Xe with the shortest wavelengths observed below 12 nm. These experimental findings on the ions, electrons, and radiation produced give information on the coupling mechanism governing the nonlinear interaction.
