Abstract
Alumina is an important ceramic material and has complex damage behavior under impact due to its highly anisotropic crystalline structure. Damage in tx-alumina under hypervelocity impact is investigated using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations containing 540-million atoms. The study identifies plastic transformation and deformation mechanisms under impact speed higher than 15km/s. Their critical conditions and propagation behavior are investigated. © 2007 Materials Research Society.
