Abstract

Recent evidence has shown that crack closure may play a dominant role on the fatigue crack propagation (FCP) of titanium alloys. This influence is particularly evident at low growth rates where microstructure, environment, and mean stress are known to be important. In this study, the influence of crack closure, grain size and stress ratio on the FCP behavior of Ti-6Al-4V and Ti-8. 6Al in vacuum has been investigated. Increasing stress ratio and refining the grain size increased crack propagation rates. The amount of crack closure was observed to correlate with increasing fracture surface roughness and the degree of crack path deviation.
