Abstract

A packaged Er-doped aluminosilicate planar optical waveguide amplifier (POWA) with 15 dB of net gain at 1550 nm with 150 mW of 980 nm pump is presented. The POWA has a broad spectrum comparable to erbium doped fiber amplifier (EDFA). In a 10 Gb/s bit error rate (BER) experiment, receiver sensitivities from -34.8 to -36 dB were measured in the 1532-1565 nm band and no error floor was detected. Mode converters that allowed low loss coupling between 11% delta aluminosilicate and standard P-glass waveguides were also demonstrated, opening the way for practical integration of POWAs on the chip. Propagation losses in these waveguides were reduced to 0.2 dB/cm.
