Abstract

The preparation and characterization of a lyotropic liquid-crystalline gel formed via the interaction of water with a room-temperature ionic liquid, 1-decyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide, was described. Addition of water to ionic liquid resulted in its spontaneous self-organization and the concomitant formation of liquid-crystalline gel. Samples of the room-temperature ionic liquids (RTIL) in the fluid and gel states were examined by transmission Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Results showed that gelation arises from diminution of hydrogen bonding between the imidazolium ring and the bromide counterion.
