Abstract
In the present study, polycrystalline, dense MgO cubes is penetrated by liquid monticellite (CaMgSiO4) at 1700 °C. A series of penetrated samples was prepared by incrementing the amount of liquid phase from two to twenty volume percent. The microstructure of the samples is studied using visible-light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and conventional transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The morphology of the grains in the polished sections of the penetrated samples is studied in SEM. TEM studies of these samples reveal that penetrated microstructure is complicated, showing MgO grains immersed in a matrix of highly-defective monticellite.
