Multiparticle interactions and optical gain in chemically-synthesized quantum dots

Abstract

Chemical synthesis allows routine fabriction of semiconductor nanoparticles with sub-10-nm dimensions and very narrow size distributions. These nanoparticles are often referred to as colloidal or nanocrystal quantum dots (NQDs). As such, the role of multiparticle effects on the optical-gain performance of strongly confined CdSe NQDs are analyzed. The obtained data indicate that multiparticle interactions and interctions involving two electron-hole pairs (biexcitons) has significnt effect on the optical-gain lifetime, its amplitude, and gain pump-intensity thresholds.
