Abstract

Proton induced gamma-ray emission (PIGE) analysis provides a useful method for direct determination of the nitrogen concentration in the surfaces of nitrided samples. The aims of the present work are to study the optimum conditions of analysis and depth profiling of the nitrogen concentration in nitrided steel surfaces using the reaction 15N(p, αγ)12C [1,2]. In order to investigate the possibility of practical applications, a number of nitrided samples produced by a factory have been tested.
