Abstract

Researchers have employed a new materials design model that comprises of two steps including the identification of a set of microstructures that are theoretically predicted to meet or exceed a combination of the desired properties. A significant aspect for achieving success in materials design is the availability of validated models that predict the processing-microstructure- property relationships in materials systems. The system of predictive models developed is firmly coupled throughout the design process to an efficient experimental system of model calibration, validation, and databases linking materials microstructures to properties and performance. A number of materials departments realized the lack of a well-developed design tradition within the materials R&D communities and adopt major initiatives in computational materials design at both the undergraduate and graduate levels that requires multi-disciplinary partnerships such as between material scientists and mechanical engineers.
