Abstract
It is shown that the true activation area A* is less than the apparent activation area B*, and the difference between A* and B* is calculated in terms of quantities obtainable in a tensile test. This result depends on the assumptions discussed in the paper, but represents a generalization of previous work in the sense that a sinusoidal stress field need not be assumed.
