Abstract

Shock wave response of tantalum was discussed. Lateral stresses developed by shock loading in tantalum were determined using manganin stress gauges. The shear strength behind the shock was evaluated using longitudinal impact stresses and lateral stresses. Results show that with an increase in impact stress, the shear strength in tantalum increases, and during shock loading the lateral stress in tantalum increases behind the shock front.
