Abstract
The motion of steps on the (0 0 1) surface of MgAl2O4 spinel is discussed. Atomic force microscopy observations of surface faceting and evaporation after heating to high temperatures are reported. The structural relationship between single and double-surface steps on the MgAl2O4(0 0 1) surface is established. Mechanisms for the formation, motion and dissociation of the double steps are proposed. © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
