Abstract
We used acoustic techniques to measure the two independent shear moduli of β-phase PdH0.71 in the range 1.4 K < T < 300K. The temperature dependence of C= (C11 - C12)/2 shows a small peak at ∼55 K, and a sigmoid-shaped decrease near 170 K. We associate the peak with the well-known "50 K anomaly", which is observed in other physical properties of β-phase PdHx and PdDx. We propose that the 50 K anomaly is a purely kinetic effect arising from the freezing of the hydrogen short-range order as the hydride is cooled.
