The nature of the glass transition

Abstract

The free-volume model was first proposed to study movement in dense liquids near the liquid → glass transition Tg. The model has been extended in the last few years to apply to the thermodynamics near Tg, to relaxation and the glass transition and to tunneling centers at very low temperatures. In this paper, we first review the essential elements of our new free-volume model and then discuss several recent experimental results on relaxation phenomena which support this picture of the glass transition. © 1984.
