The stress versus strain response of single β-HMX crystals in quasi-static compression

Abstract

Abstract. The room temperature quasi-static compressive stress vs. strain response of single crystals of β-HMX has been measured. Cuboidal crystals were loaded either on the (110) face or along the [001] direction. Stress on the loaded face was calculated from the applied force. Strain was measured using digital image correlation (DIC) from a random pattern sprayed onto the crystal surface. When loaded along the [001] direction and observed on the (110) face, the response was seen to be elastic up to fracture with a modulus of ~12 GPa. When loaded on the (110) face and observed on the face corresponding to the [001] direction the crystal behaved in an elastic-plastic manner. This response is explained in terms of the twinning/slip response of HMX on the (101) plane with direction [101 ]. The effect of increasing the temperature to +55°C is reported and brief review of relevant HMX literature is included.
