Abstract
Deuterium trapping characteristics of 304 LN and 12R72HV stainless steel have been measured as a function of He+ predamage fluence with 8 keV He+. Nuclear reaction analyses of the near surface deuterium with the D3He, αH and D(3He, p)4He reactions show that the deuterium saturation concentration increases with increasing He+ fluence, up to a maximum concentration of ∼-0.06 deuterium/metal ratio for 1017 He+/cm2 predamage fluence. At higher He+ predamage fluences, the saturation deuterium concentration decreases markedly, dropping to only ∼-0.02 deuterium/metal ratio with 1019 He+/cm2 predamage fluence. This decrease in deuterium trapping at high He+ fluence is attributed to the formation of He-induced blisters and microporosity, lowering the number of traps, and also reducing the characteristic diffusion length from the trapped deuterium to the free surface.
