Ultrafast demagnetization in ferromagnetic iron

Abstract

We report unambiguous observation of an ultrafast component to demagnetization in epitaxially-grown ferromagnetic iron films after absorption of an intense femtosecond pulse. Demagnetization occurs in 2.5±0.5 ps, comparable to the measured electronic relaxation time.
