Abstract

Energy extraction measurements for a XeCl amplifier performed with 200-fs and 3-ps pulses are presented. The purpose is to gain understanding of the effect of limited bandwidth on ultrashort pulse amplification. It is found that for pulse durations <3 ps, the saturation energy is approximately 1.0 mJ/cm2. There is little deviation from this value with varying amplifier conditions (different buffer gases and small signal gain lengths), indicating that the disagreement between present and previously published results on the value of the saturation energy is not due simply to differing experimental conditions. It is also found that the small signal-gain for the 200-fs pulse is suppressed relative to the gain of a long (>10-ns) narrow bandwidth pulse. The results indicate a reduced contrast ratio, which will ultimately limit the useful output from high-brightness XeCl laser systems.
